GCAL First Lab accredited by SCS for traceability of gem identification

SCS Global Services (SCS), a pioneer and leader in the field of sustainability standards and third party certification, has issued its first “Certificate of Accreditation for Gem Identification Verification Provider” to the GCAL (Gem Certification & Assurance Lab). Technical accreditation was issued in part on the basis of the fact that GCAL is the only gem laboratory in the world to be ISO 17025 accredited, as well as on the knowledge of its technical experts.

In its Gem Identification Laboratory Accreditation Report, SCS confirmed that “the New York City Laboratory of GCAL meets the accreditation criteria as a gem identification facility required for assurance of origin traceability under SCS-007 Jewelery Durability Standard – Diamonds Graded for Durability for Qualification from Accredited Sources of Certified Diamonds. .

This Graded Diamond Durability Standard is the first comprehensive, multi-party sustainability standard developed for the diamond industry. It sets the world’s strictest benchmark for sustainability, transparency and provenance assurance for the diamond industry, with comprehensive environmental, social and governance arrangements as well as neutral milestones for climate and other net zero goals. The standard’s chain-of-custody provisions are supported by third-party certification that combines AI-enhanced laser ablation testing, with verification, audit and sampling of gem identification to achieve accuracy of 99%.

All SCS-007 certified diamonds graded, scanned (Gemprint) and laser engraved by GCAL which are accompanied by information on laser marking, diamond dimensions and carat weight, may carry the approved durability claim.

The significance of this achievement can be seen in the growing demand from consumers that the diamonds they buy meet the highest standards of ethical and environmental responsibility.

Angelo Palmieri, COO of GCAL, was one of the original and core members of the multi-stakeholder standards development committee, facilitated by SCS Standards, the non-profit standards development arm of SCS. “SCS and the committee members have all worked incredibly hard, under intense pressure on this process for the past 18 months. I am proud to be a part of this SCS effort, and especially proud to say that GCAL is the first gem lab in the world to achieve the SCS Accreditation Certificate, ”explained Angelo.

“This is a victory for retail jewelers and the end consumer,” continued Palmieri. “GCAL Guaranteed Diamond Certificates can now include an SCS ‘mark’, demonstrating that a diamond has been assessed for durability and certified climate neutral by SCS Global Services. We are especially proud to be certified with WD Lab Grown Diamonds in this effort, as they are the first producer in the world to achieve certification.

GCAL currently classifies and certifies premium diamonds produced by WD Lab Grown Diamonds, including those from their new consumer brand Latitude. In a recent press release, WD announced that Latitude is the world’s first certified climate neutral diamond brand. “We are proud to be the first in our industry to achieve third-party sustainability certification – a one-year process involving a full life cycle assessment and in-depth audits. We look forward to continuing our partnership with GCAL to ensure full and transparent diamond traceability and chain-of-custody for our customers, ”said Sue Rechner, CEO of WD Lab Grown Diamonds.
