A Michigan manufacturer plans to introduce residents of Madera to a new product that aims to reduce the rampant theft of catalytic converters in the Central Valley.

ACAT Global, which bills itself as an innovator in emissions control technology for gas-powered vehicles, will present Saturday at a smog testing event at Madera Fairgrounds on its “game-changing” catalytic converters and new engraving, according to a press release.

The protest comes as the theft of catalytic converters reaches a fever pitch in the Central Valley and across the country. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said last year it had 58% more reports of vehicle part thefts than in 2020.

A recent robbery in northwest Fresno lasted less than two minutes and happened on the street in broad daylight. The converter loss totaled $700.

According to a press release, ACAT Global manufactures catalytic converters using “patented metal herringbone technology” costing between $400 and $1,000. The company claims the parts create improved fuel economy, increased performance and improved sonic vibration – all for less than other catalytic converters. It has also been approved for use by California regulators.

The event, hosted by nonprofit Valley CAN (Clean Air Now), will offer free vehicle emissions screenings and a $500 repair voucher for those who fail the test. Vouchers can be used at local authorized stores to install an ACAT global proprietary metal horn converter.

“Our metal substrate catalytic converters meet Federal and California emissions requirements, but cost much, much less than those on the market today,” said Joe Moch, CEO of Harlevoix, Michigan-based ACAT Global. . “I will be on hand to explain how they can be easily installed by a local shop when it needs to be replaced because it is not working or has been stolen. With the high cost of fuel today, it’s crucial for area drivers to make sure your vehicles are running smoothly. And with our new engraving program, thieves will avoid stealing ACAT Global units because it will be easy to prosecute them for criminal theft.

According to the California Air Resources Board, the transportation sector is responsible for 40% of the state’s overall greenhouse gas emissions and more than 70% of all smog-forming emissions. It is estimated that 10-15% of motor vehicles in California are responsible for more than 50% of light vehicle smog in the state.

The biggest culprits are vehicles that are 20 years old or older, which emit 30 times more smog-forming pollutants than a 5-year-old vehicle.

Madera-area residents are encouraged to bring their vehicle to Madera Fairgrounds (1850 Cleveland Ave Madera, CA 93637) from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday if they believe it needs smog-related repairs for a free emissions test. If a vehicle breaks down, its owner receives a $500 voucher for emissions-related repairs at a local STAR-certified smog shop. Money can only be used for diagnostics, smog testing, smog repair work (including catalytic converters) and certification.

This event only provides emissions projections for gasoline vehicles; no diesel is tested. No official smog certificate will be issued. The data collected is only used for internal reporting and is not shared with external agencies.

The representatives of ACAT Global will demonstrate how each catalytic The converter will be burned and the information put into a database. If a unit is stolen, the information will be available to law enforcement. They will be alerted in case of theft catalytic converter is sold by a thief.

ACAT Global catalytic Converters are available as a universal or direct fit system from independent stores in California on vehicles from 48 different global car brands.
