Mock Brothers upholstery steeped in tradition

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. — Legacy is at the heart of a family business in Sand Springs. For over 80 years, Mock Brothers Saddlery has carried on the cowboy tradition.

“We’re not a chain store. It’s strictly old-fashioned and personalized,” says store co-owner Bret Mock.

Three generations of brothers ran Mock Brother’s Saddlery and Western Wear. Albert, Archie and Claude Mock opened the outpost in 1941.

“My great-uncle, my father, and my grandfather worked in the Osage cowboy and learned to make saddles. Another great-uncle, grandfather’s brother, had an accident, and that crippled it, so everyone moved here to open the store,” Bret says.

The Western store is believed to be the oldest saddlery in Oklahoma. Originally located in the old stockyards of Tulsa, it has changed locations over the years, but the foundation of the store’s family tradition has remained time tested.

“We learned it from dad, and dad learned it from grandpa,” says Bret.

Even now you will find this set of Mock Brothers making handmade leather goods here.

“That’s my brother Greg in the saddle shop,” Bret said.

Bret and Greg work on everything from cases to handcrafted wallets. The saddles are the standouts of the store, so popular that custom orders have a two-year reserve. The Mock Brothers say it’s because of their quality and old-fashioned craftsmanship. A simple saddle can take 70 hours to build and twice that to hand tool.

“Everything is done by knife, without machines. The leather comes in one big side. We cut it, wet it, shape it, mold it and put it back in place so that everything is hand cut and made by hand.” , explains Bret.

Cowboys flock to Mocks for everything western, from boots to bits, chaps to custom hats. The brothers tell 2 News Oklahoma’s Julie Chin that if you’ve been in business that long, you’re sure to have some exciting clients. So it probably shouldn’t surprise you that famous Oklahomans walked in.

“Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Garth Brooks have all been there. We build a lot of stuff for Brooks and Dunn. Reba McEntire came here,” Bret says.

It’s a place where people always come first. “It’s always personal. You’ll get a personal greeting here,” says Bret

“It’s the Cowboy Way,” says Bret, and no matter how many years pass, it never goes out of style.
