Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE)

There are different types of epilepsy that affect the brain, causing groups of brain cells to transmit abnormal signals and generate seizures.

Our brain is made up of four lobes, that is, the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, western lobe, and temporal lobe. The most common type of epilepsy in the brain is frontal lobe epilepsy and temporal lobe epilepsy.

In the frontal lobe epilepsy the seizures originate from the anterior part of the brain. It generates symptoms that may be associated with a sleep disorder or psychiatric problems.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that affects both sides of the temporal lobes. It is not specified as left or right temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). It is generally referred to as TLE, which is temporal lobe epilepsy, which affects the process of short-term memory and emotions.

What is temporal lobe epilepsy?

The term TLE is a type of epilepsy used to describe a seizure in the temporal lobe region of the brain. TLE is sometimes called focal epilepsy with defective consciousness. ETL appears in about 6/10 people with focal epilepsy.

Some people remain aware of what is happening, but when the seizures become more intense the patient may appear awake but may be unconscious. These people’s lips and hands can make repetitive, meaningless movements.

Temporal lobe epilepsy: causes:

About 25% of TLEs occur for unknown reasons, while some of the other causes are:

  • Scars of the temporal lobe due to the death of a nerve cell
  • Brain inflammation
  • Brain infection
  • Cerebral lesion – brain-damage
  • Brain tumour
  • Developmental malformations
  • Vascular distortions in the brain
  • Genetic causes or genetic variations
  • Alcohol addiction or withdrawal
  • Heart attack, stroke, and condition causing oxygen to the brain

Symptoms of temporal lobe crisis:

TLE symptoms depend on the patient’s consciousness during a seizure. Symptoms can be conscious focal seizures and focal seizures with altered consciousness.

Conscious focal seizures:

Such seizures are simple partial which occur without loss of consciousness. This means that this type of seizure does not alter the level of consciousness. The duration of such an attack is from a few seconds to two minutes.

The following symptoms are important in this type

  • Temporal lobe epilepsy anger is an unusual but known issue
  • Sudden feelings of worry or anxiety, rage, grief, etc.
  • Daydreaming (a feeling of closeness), a memory or confusion (a feeling of strangeness)
  • A feeling of nausea in the stomach
  • Changes in the sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch or taste.
  • Visual defects
  • Difficult or unable to speak

Crises of consciousness with focal alteration:

Such seizures are complex partial, which occur with complete loss of consciousness. This means that this type of seizure alters the level of consciousness to some extent. Such seizures show an aura which is kind of a warning sign before they happen. We can also think of Aura as crises; it is essentially a level of conscious focal crisis which is advanced to the level of focal altered consciousness crisis.

The duration of such an attack is from 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

The following symptoms are important in this type

  • Looking at
  • Repetitive actions and gestures of the hands (stirring), eyes (excessive blinking) and mouth (swallowing, chewing)
  • Confusion
  • Modified response capacity

Temporal lobe epileptic personality:

The concept of the temporal lobe epileptic personality is old. Very early on, people with such disorders were considered demons. The thought that such a condition presents some sharing with another spiritual realm is still in control in some communities today.

In some history, this condition was also seen as a punishment for people who exhibited morally reckless behavior.

According to research, Temporal lobe epilepsy nhs can damage the brain of some people. So if you are wondering if TLE influences individual personality, the answer is yes. TLE affects personality to some extent, but generally so that analysis and treatment of any problematic situation might.

The personality changes in TLE are the best example of the physiological and anatomical system of emotion.

Treatment of temporal lobe seizures:

There are many drugs on the market to treat TLE. Doctors will prescribe these medications to the most suitable patients based on all medical history.

A slight change in diet is also included in the treatment of ELT. A ketogenic diet that includes high fat and low carbohydrate content is given to some patients in whom drugs do not successfully control seizures.

Surgery is only attempted when patients with TLE are unable to respond to a drug. Or seizures occur because of an injury or tumor. The surgery performed for TLE is a temporal lobectomy, in which part of the temporal lobe is removed.

In this process, the laser is guided at the scar level. It targets the part of the temporal lobe that generates seizures using MRI. The heat emitted by the laser destroys the tissue causing the seizures.

  • Electrical brain stimulators:

When all of the above treatments fail to control TLE, nerve stimulation instruments are used. They work the same way a pacemaker reacts to unusual heart pulses and monitors.

One of these instruments is a vagus nerve stimulator that gives short, irregular electrical bursts to the brain to decrease seizures.

Another type is a reactive neurostimulation instrument that produces an electrical explosion to block or reduce a seizure.

Although TLE can be treated successfully with medication or surgery, it still puts TLE patients at risk. People with ELT who do not respond to medications are more prone to mood and memory problems.

The quality of life is reduced and the risk of death is increased due to these challenges. If it is adequately managed by a Neurology department, people with seizures can enjoy a lifetime.
